OUR TA

HLA specializes in improving access to health care for consumers through win-win solutions fashioned in collaboration with mission-driven health care system stakeholders. We have extensive experience working with health care providers, health plans, human services entities, and government agencies to find solutions that benefit the health of individuals and health system entities that serve them. One major program through which HLA achieves these results is our Mental Health Advocacy Program for Kids (MHAP for Kids). A two-year Boston University study of MHAP for Kids found the program significantly improves children’s health and reduces their need for acute treatment. Another HLA program, our Immigrant Health Initiative, has demonstrably improved individuals’ health by reducing barriers to health insurance enrollment and health care.

WHAT MAKES THIS VENDOR UNIQUE

  • We are the only legal aid organization in Massachusetts that focuses exclusively on health care issues.
  • Our team members have extensive experience both navigating the health care system for individual consumers (through direct representation or consultations with health care entity staff) and working for improvements on a system-wide level.
  • All of our attorneys have the capacity to deliver highly-rated trainings on a variety of health care topics for ACO and Community Partner staff.

A SUCCESSFUL TA EXPERIENCE

Our Mental Health Advocacy Program for Kids has operated separate multi-year collaborations with two MassHealth ACOs. Within these initiatives, our ACO partners identified children with unmet mental health needs resulting in poor health, educational underachievement, and high acute care utilization. Our attorneys coordinated the efforts of our ACO partners, Community Partners, schools, and state agencies to ensure these children receive appropriate services when needed. The strong results of our work include improved health and scholarship for youth and reduced acute care usage.

ABOUT HEALTH LAW ADVOCATES

Health Law Advocates (HLA) is a public interest law firm with a mission to improve access to health care for income-eligible Massachusetts residents. HLA was founded to harness the unique influence of legal advocacy to assist individuals and achieve systemic reforms. We are in our 25th year of service to the community and have a long history of successful collaborations with a wide range of health care system entities, including providers, insurers, human services agencies, and government. Our team of attorneys and other professionals pursue HLA’s goals by providing legal assistance to individuals and consultations to health care system stakeholders, conducting training programs, and performing policy advocacy. We also create initiatives to focus on the needs of specific populations such as, but not limited to, children with mental illness, immigrants, transgender people, and people with disabilities in need of in-home health services.

ORGANIZATION FUN FACTS

  • Our staff teams up to create musical “playlists” through our CD Club. Each week, a staff person selects a theme (e.g. songs for long road trips) and the rest of the staff nominates tunes for the playlist. The person who selected the theme picks the songs for the playlist. We learn a lot about each other and each other’s musical tastes in the process!
